In 1868 (Meiji 1), the preaching hall was established with Nichishū of the Jikyōin at Seichūzan Hokkekyō-ji as the founding monk. In 1879 (Meiji 12), the temple was renamed Jōjō-ji and a consecration ceremony was held. The various halls that collapsed during the Great Kanto Earthquake were rebuilt in 1924 (Taishō 13).
