In the medieval period, puppeteers spread the faith in Ebisu nationwide through puppet performances, and alongside commercial development, it came to be worshipped as the god of business. During the Meiji era, it separated and became independent from Hirota Shrine, and was elevated to the rank of a prefectural shrine.
