Founded in Wado 6 (713 CE) by imperial decree of Emperor Genmei as the protective deity of the Uto region. The shrine buildings were burned down in Tensho 16 (1588) but were rebuilt at the current site by Kato Kiyomasa in Keicho 6 (1601).
