It is said that the temple was founded in 1199 CE (Shoji 1) when Hōnen visited Shinko-ji and the monk Kishu Zenji converted to the Jodo-shu sect. In 1504 CE (Eiō 1), the monk Seiyu Shonin relocated the temple to its current site. During the destruction of Shinko-ji in 1615 CE (Genna 1), the principal image was transferred to this temple. In the Meiji era, the temple was also used as a temporary office building for the Nagano Prefectural Government.
