室町時代に比叡山の僧・盛尊和尚が開山した寺院で、元和2年（1616年）に現在地へ移転した。前田利家公が盛尊和尚を心の師と仰ぎ、自身の信仰の堂場とした。利家公は夭折した六女・菊姫の供養を願い、金沢城付近に西方寺を移建した。
