Founded during the Tenchou era (824-834 CE) by Chisui Daidek, a senior disciple of Kukai, as a branch temple and precept training ground for Kongou-ji. It fell into ruin by the late Heian period but was revived during the Kenji era (1275-1278 CE) by Myoho Jisei Shonin. In 1290 CE (Shouou 3), it was granted the title of Byoudou Shinno-in, becoming independent from Kongou-ji. It has since undergone various restorations and mergers to reach its present state.
