History
According to tradition, it was founded in 819 CE (Kōnin 10) by Kūkai and was originally named Bodhicitta-in. It was rebuilt during the Eikyō era by the monk Zōun Sōjō, and later relocated to its current site at the ruins of Nio Castle during the Hōei era, at which time it was renamed Kakujoin.
