Kanchiin
京都市南区九条町403
A sub-temple (tato) of Toji and a special headquarters (betsugaku honzan) of the Toji Shingon sect. It is famous for the Jusan (thirteen temple pilgrimage) and houses the National Treasure guest hall (kyakuden) and the Important Cultural Property seated statues of the Five Great Mahavairocana Buddhas.
History
Founded in 1359 CE (Bun'ō 4) or 1358 CE (Bun'ō 3) during the Nanboku-chō period by the scholar-monk Gōhō as a sub-temple of Toji. The main image, the Five Great Mahavairocana Buddhas, was discovered by Kenbō in a broken state at Anjō-ji and Jō-ji, repaired, and enshrined here. During the Edo period, it was designated as a center for the promotion of the Shingon sect as a whole and produced many scholar-monks.
