安土桃山時代以前、あるいは鎌倉時代以前に創建されたと推測される真言宗智山派の寺院。長く若宮八幡宮（現在の篠原八幡神社）の別当寺を務め、江戸時代には寺子屋を開設するなど地域教育にも貢献した。明治時代の大火で堂宇を焼失したが、大正時代に隆超和上によって再建され、第二次世界大戦中には川崎大師平間寺の本尊や宝物を疎開させる役割も担った。
