The origin of Mount Tawamune is said to date back to when Fujiwara no Sadae, the eldest son of Fujiwara no Kamatari, returned from Tang China and erected a thirteen-story pagoda on his father's grave. It became a sub-temple of Enryakuji and developed alongside the prosperity of the Fujiwara clan, but it suffered repeated arson attacks due to conflicts with Kofukuji. Before the mid-14th century, it was known as Seireiin, and later referred to as Kokugin, Dansan-ya, or Dansan-sha.
