The shrine was founded in 1516 CE (Eiroku 13) on the 11th day of the first month of early spring, when Kaji Kikubomaru of the Nakayama clan and Hira Shigekiyoshi of the Hatakeyama clan enshrined the deity Takeminakata-no-mikoto, originally naming it Suwa Shrine. Later, the Hachiman deity was enshrined from Shinshu Province, and the shrine became known as Suwa Hachiman Shrine. It was rebuilt in 1584 CE (Tensho 12), and in 1887 CE (Meiji 20), it was relocated to its current site where the shrine buildings were constructed.
