During the reign of Emperor Keikō, Yamato Takeru created this shrine to enshrine Suwa Ookami as a guardian deity for the development of the eastern provinces when he paid distant respects to Mount Fuji. Later, during the reign of Emperor Go-Fushimi, Hachiman Ookami was enshrined as a co-deity (sōden-gami) based on the divine will of Suwa Myōjin. The current main hall (honden) was rebuilt in 1694 CE (Genroku 7).
