History
In 1187 CE (Bunji 3), the first Shimazu Tadahisa invited the Upper and Lower Great Deities from Suwa in Shinano Province to be enshrined within the castle as the guardian deity of the domain. Later, the sixth-generation Osumi Shimazu Iehisa relocated the shrine to Kagoshima to pray for the protection of the three provinces. The shrine was moved to its current location in the late 15th century during the tenure of the second-generation Kuniyasu, the lord of Mizumi and head of the Satsuma family.
