History
Traditionally said to have been founded in 648 CE (Taika 4), its origin is believed to be a branch spirit (bunrei) from Suwa Grand Shrine brought by migrants from Shinano Province. During the Edo period, it was relocated by the Mizoguchi family of Niigata Domain to Niigata Castle and later to its current location, receiving reverence from successive domain lords. The shrine buildings burned down in 2001 but were rebuilt in 2004 to resemble their previous appearance.
