History
Traditionally said to have been founded in 648 CE (Taika 4). Its origin is believed to stem from a branch spirit (bunrei) of Suwa Taisha (Suwa Grand Shrine) brought by people who migrated from Shinano Province. During the Edo period, it was relocated by the Mizoguchi family of Niigata Domain to locations both inside and outside the castle, and moved to its current site in 1688 CE (Genroku 1). The shrine burned down in 2001 but was rebuilt in 2004 to resemble its original appearance.
