History

It was enshrined around the Daidō era (806–810 CE) at Kameishi Plain and was protected by Iwaki Hangan, the Hira Masaka clan. Due to a great tsunami around the Bunmei era, the shrine was relocated to the top of Takijiri Mountain. In 1675, it was moved to its current location at the site of the Hangan Residence and designated as the prayer shrine of the Iizumi Domain. In 1873, the deities of Suwa and Hachiman were merged, and the shrine was classified as a Gōsha.

What visitors say

Located within a residential area, this compact shrine has a refreshing atmosphere. It features a fine worship hall (haiden) and offers Goshuin (shrine seal stamps) and 'Iwaki Shintama' (Iwaki sacred jade). Being close to the coast, it offers good views. In summer, wind chimes and lanterns are displayed, and during the Watermelon Festival, limited-edition Omamori (protective charms) and Ema (votive plaques) are distributed.
