History
In 1257 CE (Bunji 3), the first Shimazu Tadahisa enshrined the Upper and Lower Great Deities (Daimyojin) from Suwa in Shinano Province within the castle as the guardian deity of the domain. Later, the sixth-generation Shimazu Ienaga of Osumi Province relocated the shrine to Kagoshima to pray for the protection of the three provinces. The shrine was moved to its current location in the late 15th century, and the main hall was rebuilt in the Shinkyo-zukuri architectural style in 1992 CE (Heisei 4).
