Toyouke Daijingu (Ise Jingu Outer Shrine)

Located in Ise City, Mie Prefecture, this is the principal shrine of the Ise Jingu complex, enshrining Toyouke Oomikami, the guardian deity of food, clothing, shelter, and industry. According to the 'Toyoke-gu Gishiki-chou' (Ritual Manual of Toyoke Shrine), in the 22nd year of Emperor Yuryaku (478 CE), Amaterasu Oomikami appeared in a dream to Emperor Yuryaku and instructed him to bring the deity Toyoke Oomikami from the province of Tango closer to her. Consequently, the deity was moved from Tango Province (present-day northern Kyoto Prefecture) to this site. Toyouke Oomikami serves as the Mikadenokami (deity who prepares meals), offering morning and evening meals to Amaterasu Oomikami enshrined at the Inner Shrine. Therefore, there is a custom called 'Soto-miya Sen-sai' (visiting the Outer Shrine first) when visiting both shrines. The Shikinen Sengu (ritual rebuilding of the shrine every 20 years) is conducted with solemnity, just like at the Inner Shrine.

This shrine enshrines Toyuke-Ooyakami, the deity who oversees the meals of Amaterasu-Omikami. Following the ancient custom of 'Gekujin-sensai' (visiting the Outer Shrine first), pilgrims traditionally worship here before the Inner Shrine. During Hatsumode, it attracts one of the highest numbers of visitors in the country.

The most historically significant festival at the Grand Shrine, offering new rice to Toyuke-Ooyakami.
This is the most important rite at the Grand Shrine, where the new harvest of the year is offered for the first time to express gratitude for the deity's grace. The solemn rites of Yuki-Oomeshi (Imperial Food Offering) and Heiheino-gi (Offering of Sacred Items) are performed (at the Outer Shrine on October 15-16).
