Toyohoku Shrine
長浜市南呉服町6−37
A historic shrine enshrining Toyotomi Hideyoshi, dedicated to preserving the legacy and benevolence of the lord who once ruled Nagahama Castle.
Enshrined deities
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Kotoshironushi-no-Kami (Ebisu)
History
Established in 1600 CE (Keichō 5) by local townspeople to honor the virtuous legacy of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. During the Edo period, worship was prohibited following the extinction of the Toyotomi clan, but the shrine survived by secretly enshrining Toyohoku Daimyōjin (the Great Deity of Toyohoku) when a shrine to Ebisu was built. The worship hall (haiden) was rebuilt in the Meiji era, and the shrine was relocated to its current site and renamed Toyohoku Shrine in the Taishō era.
