History
Emperor Meiji issued an imperial decree to establish Hokoku Shrine to enshrine Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It was founded as a branch of the Toyokuni Shrine in Kyoto. During the Taisho era, it became independent from the Kyoto Toyokuni Shrine, and the reading of its name was changed from 'Toyokuni' to 'Hokoku'. In 1961, due to the expansion of the Osaka City Hall building, the shrine was relocated to its current site within the Ninomaru of Osaka Castle.
