Houkyoin, Toyosama
桜井市初瀬776
A temple of the Shingon Toyosama sect and a tower-head temple (tato) of Hase-ji. It is also an extra station (banga) of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
History
It is said to have originated in the 7th year of Tenpyo (735 CE) during the Nara period, when the monk Tokudo, who founded the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage, built a thatched hut on this site. In the 8th year of Genroku (1695 CE) during the early Edo period, the monk Ei-gaku, the abbot of Hase-ji, revived the temple and established it as the Kaizendo (Founding Hall) of Hase-ji.
