Founded during the Kōan period of the Kamakura period by Nagai Tokihide in Takahata Town, Yamagata Prefecture. During the Northern and Southern Courts period, it received protection from the Date clan. In the Sengoku period, Date Terumune invited a resident priest to oversee the education of Date Masamune. Later, following the relocation of the Date clan, the temple moved to its current location in 1638 CE (Kan'ei 15).
