The temple was founded during the Kamakura period when Hōjō Tokiyori sent the high priest Kenzei Da-Ajari to build a memorial for his young son, Hōjō Masayori. The temple took its name from the era name Kōchō of that time and enshrined Hakusan Gongen as its guardian deity. The original Kamakura-period structures were destroyed in two fires, and the temple was relocated to its current site in 1626 CE (Kan'ei 3).
