History
The temple was founded by Mikawano-kami Chitsuna, the younger brother of Fukushima Yamatonori. After losing his son in battle, Chitsuna became a monk and established Senfukuji in Higashihara Village, Asa District. During the Tenmon era, the temple converted to the Jodo Shinshu sect. In the era of the Fukushima clan, it was relocated to its current site, and the mountain name (sangō) was changed to Higashiharayama while the temple name (jigō) was changed to Chousenji. It was originally one of the twelve sub-temples (jūni-bō) of Butsugoji.
