Katsui Kiyoshige named it 'Ame-furi-zan Seikō-ji' (Rain-Falling Mountain Seikō-ji) in reference to the continuous rain during the stay of Shinran. Around the Eiroku period, the temple was left without a resident priest due to war and floods. It was revived as a Tendai temple during the Kan'ei period. Due to successive floods, the mountain name was changed from Ame-furi-zan to Chōetsu-zan.
