Founded in the Omi Province by Takashige, the third son of Sasaki Takatsume, who took the dharma name Shinshin and established the temple as Anyo-ji. During the Sengoku (Warring States) period, the temple repelled an invasion by the Asakura clan and participated in the Battle of Ishiyama. In the Meiji era, it was moved to its current location on the site of the third bailey (san-no-maru) of Hachiman Castle, and was rebuilt in 1936.
