The shrine fell into disuse during the medieval period but was reconstructed in the early modern era under the initiative of Tokugawa Mitsukuni of the Mito Domain. It was subsequently relocated to its current site and revived by Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. According to tradition, Okuninushi-no-Mikoto is enshrined at Oarai, while Sukuna-Hikona-no-Mikoto is enshrined at Sakurase, highlighting the close relationship between the two shrines. In 1885 (Meiji 18), it was designated as a Kokubei Chusha (National Shrine of Middle Rank).
