Founded in 1829 CE (Bunsei 12) by order of Tokugawa Harutomo, the 10th daimyo of the Kishu Domain, modeled after Hōnen-in in Kyoto. Tokumon served as the founding monk (Kaizan) and Honben as the patron (Kaiki). Harutomo provided patronage by establishing halls and towers as a place for Nembutsu (recitation of the Buddha's name). The entire mountain complex burned down in 1881 CE (Meiji 14), and the temple was rebuilt on a smaller scale to its current state.
