According to tradition, it is one of the 48 temples founded by Prince Shotoku and is said to have been established by Soga no Maro. Excavation surveys suggest the possibility of its founding around 650 CE (Hakuchi 1), and a large-scale temple complex existed from the Asuka period to the early Nara period. Although the halls and pagodas were destroyed by fire during conflicts such as the Nochuji Battle in the Nanbokucho period, the temple was revived in 1661 CE (Kanbun 1) and flourished during the Edo period as one of the three great monasteries of the Ritsuin (Vinaya) schools.
