Located on the mid-slopes of Mount Zanto in Kotohira Town, Nakatado District, Kagawa Prefecture, this shrine enshrines Omononushi-no-Kami as the main deity and Emperor Sutoku as a secondary deity. Historically known by the affectionate nickname 'Kotohirasan,' it is revered nationwide as the head shrine of approximately 600 Kotohira and Kotohira shrines. As a deity of the sea and a guardian of maritime traffic, it has been deeply venerated by fishermen, sailors, and maritime professionals. Before the Meiji-era separation of Shinto and Buddhism, it was known as 'Konpira Daigongen' and was under the administration of the Shogaku-in hall of Zanto-san Matsuo-ji Temple. The approach to the main shrine involves 785 stone steps, and the total climb to the inner shrine reaches 1,368 steps. This arduous pilgrimage, known as 'Konpira-mairi,' was a dream journey for commoners during the Edo period. It is considered a sacred site of faith, with the saying 'One should visit Kotohirasan at least once in a lifetime.'
