History
Traditionally said to have been founded by Kukai in 822 CE (Kounin 13), it is the 38th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. In the late Heian period, it became a place of ascetic practice for Shugendo practitioners as a sacred site overlooking the southern Hotala (Potalaka) Pure Land of Avalokiteshvara, and it was also strongly revered by the Minamoto clan. During the Edo period, it was revived by Tadayoshi Yamanouchi, the second lord of the Tosa Domain.
