A temple of the Shugendo Tozan school located in Muroto City, Kochi Prefecture, also known as Ryuutouzan (Dragon Head Mountain) and Komyouin (Komyouin Temple). It is the 26th station of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage and is situated in a scenic area overlooking Cape Muroto.
History
In 807 CE (Doutou 2), the principal image of Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) was carved by imperial decree from Emperor Heisei, and the temple was named Kongoutouji (Kongoutouji Temple). Later, it was renamed Kongoutouji (Kongoutouji Temple) by an imperial plaque from Emperor Saga. There are also temple records stating that Kukai (Kobo Daishi), who was returning to Japan from Tang China, stopped at this location and founded the temple. During the Kamakura period, it became a place for the destitute and was called Nishi-ji (West Temple), existing as a sacred precinct.
