古代出雲文化が早く海岸線を経て能登地方に及んだのに対し、この地方は大和文化の拠点であるばかりでなく、総じて県内では最も古い文化の発祥地であるから神社の由緒でも有名なことがらを数多く残している。中世以来白山七社の一に数えられ、そのうち白山本宮・三宮・岩本とともに本宮四社といわれていた。神仏習合の当時、いわゆる七堂伽藍雲表にそびえ神官社僧、即ち神人衆徒多数をようしていた。安徳天皇の寿永2年5月、源義仲が倶利伽羅谷で平家の軍勢を打ち破ったが、これを金劔宮の神恩として、鞍置馬20頭と横江庄を寄進し、それから3年の後、後鳥羽天皇文治2年2月10日、源義経が本社に参拝一泊し、神楽を奉納している他、足利・富樫・前田等、歴代武門藩主の崇敬が篤かったのである。
