According to tradition, the shrine was founded during the Ninna era (885–889 CE) when the Takigami Great Deity was enshrined along the Takeuchi Kaido road. During the reign of Emperor Ichijo, Kuse Kaneoka was enshrined together with them, and the shrine came to be called Kaneoka Shrine. In the Meiji era, when the separation of Shinto and Buddhism was implemented, the former Shinguji temple on the grounds was closed.
