成務天皇の御代に物部臣賀夫良命が国造として赴任し、金大神を尊崇したことに由来する。元和3年に加納城主が本殿等を寄進し、明治36年より諸建物を造営したが、昭和20年の空襲で焼失した。昭和63年に有史以来の大造営を行い、現在の社殿が建立された。
