Revived in the late Kamakura period by the Zen monk Getsuha Ekan, it became a temple of the Rinzai sect's Tofukuji branch. During the Nanbokucho period, it served as an important base for the Southern Court and is also known as the final resting place of Yuki Munehiro. Due to the Yamada Great Fire in 1670 CE (Kanbun 10), the temple was relocated from a site near the Outer Shrine precincts to its current location in Iwabuchi.
