In 1973 (Shōwa 48), a sub-essence of Sugawara no Michizane was enshrined from Dazaifu Tenmangu in Kyushu, and the shrine was renamed Kinuyama Tenmangu. In 1990 (Heisei 2), the shrine received a plum sapling from Dazaifu Tenmangu for the deity's installation, and a plum garden was created within the precincts.
