History

In 1889 (Meiji 22), a sub-essence was enshrined from Ise Jingū (Ise Grand Shrine) to serve as a spiritual pillar for the settlers of the Nozawa military colony, and it was initially revered as the guardian deity of the Nozawa area under the name Kinuyama Shrine. In 1973 (Shōwa 48), a sub-essence of Sugawara no Michizane was enshrined from Dazaifu Tenmangu in Kyushu, and the shrine was renamed Kinuyama Tenmangu. In 1990 (Heisei 2), the shrine received a plum sapling from Dazaifu Tenmangu for the deity's installation, and a plum garden was created within the precincts.
