A Jōdo-shū (Pure Land) Buddhist temple located in Shimogyō-ku, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is also the 24th station of the Rōyō Sanjūsangō Kannon Reijō (33 Kannon Pilgrimage Sites of the Kyoto Region).
History
This Jōdo-shū temple was established after receiving a statue of Seikan (Avalokiteshvara) that had previously been used to ward off smallpox. The main hall and the Amida Sandan (Three Amida Buddhas) statues were developed through the donation of Itakura Katsushige, the Kyoto Shosho-dai (Kyoto Governor) of the Edo Shogunate. The temple was named Chōen-ji after the name of his estate. Although it suffered from the Tenmei Great Fire and a fire in 1931, it has since been rebuilt.
