The temple was founded by Shaku Gengi, who is said to have been a member of the Izu Ito clan and one of the Six Elders of Shonin Shinran. During the Edo period, it was located within the precincts of Tsukiji Hongwanji, but was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake. It relocated to Hita-kyu in 1929 CE (Shōwa 4) and moved to its current location in 1944 CE (Shōwa 19).
