Founded in 1348 CE (Shogō 4) by Messō Sōkō, the second son of Nakajima Kurōdo, to express gratitude to his deceased parents. Nanpu Shōmyō was invited as the founding abbot. It later became a prayer site for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and an imperial edict temple for Emperor Kōgon, reaching its peak with many sub-temples (tōtō) and branch temples. Although it declined during the Ōnin War, it was revived through donations from Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his son Hideyuki, and is now a branch temple of the Myoshinji branch of the Rinzai school.
