Founded in 1436 CE (Eikyo 8) with Ishikawa Mochimitsu, the lord of Misashi in Iwaki Province, as the founding patron and Zen master Sokaku Soku-an as the founding abbot, it was established in Ishikawa Town, Fukushima Prefecture. It built its foundations under the protection of the Ishikawa clan, but its lands were confiscated during the Oshu Shichi (the subjugation of the Oshu region) by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590 CE (Tensho 18). In 1598 CE (Keicho 3), following the transfer of the domain of Ishikawa Akihiro to Kakuda, the temple's registration was moved to Kakuda, and the structure was relocated to its current site.
