History
Monk Sawabun Shōkō established a thatched hut in 1429 CE (Eikyō 1). In 1436 CE (Eikyō 8), Zen master Unko Shuntoku took over the site, gained the devotion of Oda Dōgon and others, and formally founded the temple under the name Kichijōzan Chofukuji. The temple was destroyed in the civil wars of 1475 CE (Bunmei 7). It was later revived by Chinme Kazusa-no-kami Yasutsune to honor the souls of Hōjō Shinzaburō Tsuneshige and others, and was relocated to its current site. During the Edo period, the temple was so prosperous that it oversaw twelve branch temples.
