The shrine was established during the Kōboku era (1460–1466) by Saitō Toshifusa as the clan deity shrine for the Saitō family. It was repaired during the Ei-shō era by Saitō Toshiyasu and Nagai Nagahiro, and renovated in 1588 by Ikeda Terumasa. During the Edo period, it fell under the domain of the Owari Han, where it received deep devotion from successive daimyos and the lords of Takasu Han. It continued to be widely worshipped by commoners as the head shrine of the Nagara Sangyo region.
