Located in Hase, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, this is an independent temple of the Jodo-shu (Pure Land) sect, formally known as Kaiko-san Jiso-in Hase-dera. It has long been affectionately known as 'Hase Kannon' and is a representative Kannon pilgrimage site in the eastern region of Japan. The main object of worship is an eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva statue, standing 9.18 meters tall, making it one of the largest wooden Buddhist statues in Japan. Tradition holds that it was created in 721 CE (Yoro 5). In 736 CE (Tenpyo 8), during the reign of Emperor Shomu, it was designated as a temple for imperial prayers and is referred to as the Hase-dera style eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva. It is the fourth stop on the Sando Sanjusansho Kannon Pilgrimage. The temple grounds are famous for flowers blooming throughout the four seasons, earning it the nickname 'Kamakura's Western Pure Land.' It is particularly renowned for its hydrangeas, with 2,500 plants of 40 varieties coloring the grounds during the rainy season.
