History
The date of founding is unknown, but in 1440, a monk from this temple became the abbot of the rebuilt So-fuku-ji on Hachijo Island. Around 1615, the main hall was constructed on this site with a donation from Tokugawa Hidetada, but it was later destroyed by fire. During the Kanbun era, Chōkan Shūka of Honkaku-ji revived the temple and converted it to the Soto Zen sect. After the opening of Yokohama in 1859, Dr. Hepburn established a charitable institution here.
