It was elevated to the rank of Kanpei Taisha (Grand Shrine under direct imperial patronage) in 1899 CE (Meiji 32). In 1964 CE (Showa 39), Emperor Meiji was added to the enshrined deities, and the name was changed to Hokkaido Jingu (Hokkaido Grand Shrine). As a subsidiary shrine, Kaitaku Shrine began enshrining 36 individuals who contributed to the development of Hokkaido in 1938 CE (Showa 13). In 1954 CE (Showa 29), Yoda Benzo, known as the Agricultural Saint of Obihiro, was also enshrined.
