Founded by the monk Seigyoku in the Sakaemoto area of Omi Province during the Tenbun era (1532–1555), the temple later received the patronage of Oda Nobunaga and was relocated to Kamitatemai Dai-gu. It is said that when Nobunaga died by ritual suicide during the Honno-ji Incident in 1582 CE (Tenshō 10), the cremated remains of him and his son were interred at this temple. During the Edo period, it served as the 16th stop on the Jodo 48 Vow Temple Pilgrimage.
