History
According to tradition, Honen descended from Mount Hiei and built a thatched hut at the site where he saw purple clouds and golden light (known as the Purple Cloud Stone), marking the founding of what is considered the first temple of the Jodo-shu sect. During the tenure of the 8th abbot, Unku, Emperor Go-Koyan granted the two characters 'Kin-kai' (Golden Precept), and the temple was renamed Kinkai-ko-in (Temple of the Golden Precept and Bright Light). In 1595 (Keicho 10), the Amida-do hall was rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori.
