The temple was founded as Ariyeyama Yuuka-ji based on the legend that in 817 CE (Koun 8), the Great Teacher Saicho discovered a hot spring on Mount Ikeda, and when he stirred the water with his khakkhara (monk's staff), the deity Usnisa (Hachiman) appeared. Later, Emperor Shirakawa, who was cured of an illness by bathing in these hot springs, bestowed the name Yuge-ji upon the temple. It subsequently converted to the Rinzai sect.
