History
Legend holds that the shrine was founded in the 9th year of Emperor Keitai's reign (6th century) when Hayabintama-no-Mikoto enshrined his parents. From the medieval period onward, it was designated as the Ichi-no-Tsugu (First Shrine) of Higo Province. Kato Kiyomasa and the Hosokawa clan contributed to the construction and repair of the shrine buildings and donated land to support its operations. During the Meiji era, it was classified as a Kanpei Chusha (Medium-Rank Shrine under Imperial Patronage) and is currently listed as a Betsuhyo Shrine by the Association of Shinto Shrines.
